The belief in British Israelism may be fading out, but the idea that a particular group of people with a certain “genetic background” are God’s chosen people, is in full bloom among numerous evangelical denominations. That conviction plays a huge part in their interactions and dealings with the world. That belief has greatly impacted the world, but not in a good way. That idea is at the center of a belief called Dispensationalism, which believes that God’s people, the “Jews,” have been “regathered” to a land (in 1948), which present-day people call Israel.
That event, they believe is part of the “key” that unlocks “end time” and “last days” events spoken of by Jesus. There are few things that are further from the truth.
I cover a lot of ground in my 330-page new book, “Israel, Rapture, Tribulation: How to Sort Biblical Fact from Theological Fiction,” Daniel’s Seventy Weeks, the Olivet Discourse, the Jews, a history of date setting, and so much more. Here is a bit from Chapter Seven: “Is Modern-Day Israel God’s Chosen People?”
“The primary question for those who insist the people who inhabit modern Israel are the Jews of Biblical promise is this: What exactly is a Jew? Being Jewish is not an ethnic identity, any more than being an American (or a Christian) is an ethnic identity.
Even if someone were a remnant ethnic Jew, descended from the loins of Abraham, whose bloodline had been kept pure and undiluted all these thousands of years, the Bible says faith is the only ingredient in determining who is a true Jew and who is not.
To become a Jew, one would need to study Jewish theology, culture, customs, rituals, and history preparatory to incorporating Jewish practices into their life. If they do, and faithfully follow all the rites and duties required of Judaism, they are rightly deemed Jewish. Any children born to them after their conversion will be Jews, and their progeny will be Jewish, too—albeit with a very short Jewish heritage and ancestry.
Hence, anyone who wishes can become a Jew and follow the teachings of Judaism…
The confusing of those who follow the teachings of Judaism—whose ancestors have converted to Judaism decades or even centuries ago—with those who are genetically connected to Abraham in the Old Testament is part of the problem. The other part is the realization that, biblically, faith in the one true God was the key definition of a true Jew (a son of Abraham) and who was not—the key to who was a member of God’s covenant body the Church, or a member of the “synagogue of Satan. “I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan” (Rev. 2:9).
Many Christians who support the modern-day nation of Israel are unaware of the fact that most—if not all—the Jews that now inhabit the land where Jesus walked are not genetically related to Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob. These contemporary Jews may have been practicing the teachings of Judaism for a long time, but it is still a spurious and deceptive belief system.
Dispensationalists are very confused on this issue. Many ancestors of Israel’s current Jewish population converted to Judaism eons ago. Nevertheless, Dispensationalists insist we must support modern Israel simply because its citizens (except for its atheists!) practice a Gospel-denying religion. Dispensationalists insist God is now obligated to Jews—and that they are his “chosen people”—precisely because they faithfully practice an erroneous religion which is roundly condemned in Scripture! They also insist Jews are deserving of God’s blessings by remaining committed to error and false teaching, which at times causes pain and suffering.
It is also a fact that no modern Jews hold to the Biblical faith of Abraham; instead, they reject the teachings of Moses concerning the Messiah and hate the idea of Jesus being the Son of God and their Messiah…”
